Nutria Family
Nutria, an exotic from South America, started showing up on the
refuge in the mid 1990's and was becoming a major problem on the refuge,
girdling larger cypress trees and cutting down the smaller cypress. They
were also digging away some of the levees in search for plant roots to eat.
The severe cold spell in December of 2000 seemed to decimate
the population though they are expected to rebound. Muskrats have vertically flattened
tails while the nutria have rounded tails.
Nutria are also considerably larger than muskrat.
