Mallard
Mallards are one of the most commonly found ducks in Arkansas.
The male mallard has a green head with a white neck ring. The female colors are duller.
Mallards and hooded mergansers nest at the refuge.
Visitors can see many nesting boxes for wood ducks
who also reside at Wapanocca year-round.
There are a few resident mallards that stay on the refuge to
raise young. They nest in clumps of grass and are vulnerable to nest
predation by raccoon, opossum, and skunk. If the hen's initial nest is
destroyed they will often lay another clutch of eggs.
