Great Blue Heron
Herons frequent the ditches along the Wapanocca levy drive and nest in the refuge.
Herons often nest over dry land in tall trees in bottomland near streams or other water sources.
Herons fly with necks folded into S shapes while cranes fly with an extended neck.
They feed on fish, frogs, small mammals, and reptiles.
Herons may live more than 20 years.
The great blue heron makes up the majority of the
population found nesting in the heron/egret rookery on the refuge.
