Egret
Egrets are members of the heron family. The great white egret's wing span can reach 6'.
It feeds on fish, frogs, snakes, and crayfish in shallow water.
Great Egret populations in Arkansas have fluctuated. As agriculture and human populations expand, nesting habitat declines. Pesticides associated with ag operations can cause population decline.
Great egrets along with the great blue heron are colonial nesters
in that they nest in close proximity to each other. They build stick nests
high in tall trees. On Wapanocca there is an egret/heron rookery located
in cypress trees north of the lake. A few nests can be seen in the
distance from the observation pier before the cypress trees leaf out.
The last census recorded over 400 nests many of which were egret nests in
this rookery.
