Deer
The white-tailed deer is widely distributed in America. The underside of the tail of this deer is feathery and snow-white. When the deer is startled and begins to run, its tail stands straight up. They eat buds and twigs of wild shrubs and trees.
The reforestation of over 300 acres in recent years led to sharp
increase in the numbers of deer on the refuge by 2003. Studies showed the population was probably at its peak for the carrying capacity of the habitat available. To keep the herd and their habitat in healthy conditions, refuge officials plan to initiate a limited deer hunt in fall 0f 2003 to keep the population in check. It is estimated that approximately 300 deer are on this 5484 acre refuge.
