Crawdad or Crayfish
The crawfish pictured here was migrating across the levee from west to east in July of 2002. The levy road was littered with crawfish crushed in attempted crossings.

The crawdad is a fighter and is posed here to fight the photographers. If it loses an eye or limb in battle, a new member can grow in its place.

The crayfish feeds on snails, small fish, or the young of insects. Its burrows can damage cropland or levees.
