Coot
Coots are dark with white bills. Coots, like ducks, are aquatic. The foot of the coot is lobed with claws, instead of webbed. Coots are sometimes called mud hens.

The coots are commonly seen along the levee road grazing on grass of the levee or feeding on plants in the water during late fall to spring. Many people have never seen these birds in flight. It is not easy for them to take flight due to their relatively small wings. They can't jump up from the water but must run along the water for a distance before they become air borne. Coots nest in marshes farther north.
