Collect the following information and e-mail it to your advisor
the subject line should include the word advising.
name
ASU id number
major (CS: yes/no?; if CS, BS or BA?)
anticipated graduation date
courses enrolled in for current semester; indicate anticipated outcome for each
tentative courses to enroll in next semester; indicate any dependencies on outcome of current semester
If you are planning to graduate within the next year, please also include the following:
a copy of your unofficial transcript (copied from Web for Students at www.astate.edu)
any degree plan or checklist material you have been using
Some advisors (for example, Dr. Hammerand) require you to also do the following prior to having your hold removed:
Use your Google account to share (via email address) a Google calendar with your advisor; it should detail all 168 hours in a week using the following categories:
lecture and lab meetings, labeled by class
homework, labeled by class (Schedule three hours homework for every hour spent in a classroom, broken up into reasonable lengths.)
Use your Google account to share a Google spreadsheet with your advisor detailing your degree plan, listing by semester each course you will have taken to complete your degree. Include grades for completed courses.
You will receive a reply by e-mail about an appointment or with further questions for you.
Your advisor will make every effort to see that you understand your individual situation, but for your own sake you must become knowledgeable about the requirements spelled out in the
ASU Bulletin
in effect when you first received college credit. (The requirements in effect at that time remain in effect for a maximum of seven years.)
Degree checklists (the actual forms required by the registrar prior to graduation) are available from the list under "Requirements" at left on this page.
Any mistake made could be costly in terms of tuition or semesters spent in pursit of a degree. If you have questions, ask them, and then double check the answers you get.
Common problems encountered in meeting degree requirements:
45 hours worth of courses at the 3000 and 4000 levels must be taken after the first 30 hours of credit are completed.
A 3000 or 4000 level ASU-Jonesboro course (such as Math 3254: Calculus III) may be transferred from another
school, but it will be counted at the level taught there toward the required 45 hours of 3000 and 4000 level credit.
Note that no community college credit can satisfy this requirement, regardless of the subject.
The major GPA is calculated from all CS courses taken, including failed attempts, and must be a minimum of 2.0; this does not include other major requirements such as mathematics or physics.
18 credit hours in which D's or F's were earned can be retaken and removed from the GPA; these may include CS courses. The registrar's office must be informed that GPA recomputation is desired.
The lower level computer science courses are offered once a semester, required coures are offered once a year, and elective courses are offered once every two years.
The tentative rotation schedule is of course always subject to change.
Note that the relative infrequency of electives means that care must be taken to plan prerequisites so as to be eligible to take the course when offered.
Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science may want to consider utilizing the larger number of elective hours available for use in completing a minor. There are a number of attractive options available, including several in the College of Business.
Be aware of the deadline for filing an intent to graduate card, available in the department office, early in the semester you will complete your degree requirements.
